The Boston Celtics made an early statement in their quest to return to the NBA Finals, overwhelming the Miami Heat with a 118-100 victory in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series Sunday at TD Garden.
From the opening tip, the intensity and physicality on display signaled this would be a classic playoff battle between two of the NBA's most talented and tenacious teams. What transpired, however, was a one-sided beatdown facilitated by the Celtics' balanced offense and swarming team defense.
Celtic Points Rebounds Assists Other
Jayson Tatum 28 8 6 3 steals
Jaylen Brown 25 6 3 3 blocks
Malcolm Brogdon 16 4 5 +22
Robert Williams III 7 9 2 3 blocks
Tatum was fantastic yet again, slashing his way to 28 points while anchoring the Celtics' swarming defense with physicality and active hands. Brown matched Tatum's aggression, getting downhill for 25 points while swatting 3 shots on the other end.
Off the bench, Brogdon and the newly healthy Williams provided a huge boost. Brogdon was steady with 16 points and 5 assists, while Williams's 9 rebounds, 3 blocks and verticality around the rim made a huge impact.
"Those two played with unbelievable energy and set the tone for us," said Tatum. "Having Rob back changes everything for us defensively."
Heat Points Rebounds Assists
Jimmy Butler 23 6 4
Bam Adebayo 18 9 3
Tyler Herro 18 5 2
The Heat's big three of Butler, Adebayo and Herro totaled 59 points, but got little support beyond that. As a team, Miami shot just 42% as the rugged Celtic defense contested everything.
"They were just too physical, too connected tonight," said Butler. "We knew the playoff intensity was coming and didn't match it."
Erik Spoelstra tried various lineup tweaks, inserting Max Strus and Duncan Robinson for additional shooting. But the Celtics smothered those efforts, holding Miami to just 8-32 shooting from three.
Boston's formula was straightforward but difficult to achieve:
For Miami to bounce back in Game 2 on Wednesday, several things need to change:
Based on the lopsided nature of Game 1 and how each team's strengths profile, I'm predicting the Celtics will win this series convincingly in 5 games.
Boston has simply too much offensive firepower, defensive versatility, and two-way star power for an aging Miami team to handle. Tatum and Brown are hitting their prime, while reinforcements like Brogdon, White, and the returning Williams give the Celtics few weaknesses.
Unless Miami's three-point shooting catches fire in a major way, it's hard to see them outscoring the Celtic's balanced attack four times. Spoelstra has his work cut out to adjust and find more production outside of Butler and Adebayo.
The oddsmakers agree, installing the Celtics as -600 favorites to advance to the second round after Game 1.
Make no mistake - this Game 1 beatdown served notice that the Celtics are the team to beat out East. They played with poise, energy and confidence, flashing the elite combination of star power and depth that could propel them to Banner 18.
The Heat, meanwhile, got rudely re-introduced to the harsh realities of playoff basketball against a far superior opponent. Until they find some answers to Boston's skill, size and physicality, this could be a short stay in the postseason.
Game 2 takes on enormous importance for Miami. A 2-0 hole would likely be insurmountable against this juggernaut. But if the Heat can find their fight and grit, stealing home court could quickly turn an apparent mismatch into a classic slugfest between two battle-tested foes.
Get ready for another epic playoff encounter between these familiar rivals. If Game 1 was any indication, the Celtics may simply have too much for the aging Heat.
